TRANSCASPIAN URIAL (Ovis amon arkal)

is a large bright-colored handsome sheep, males can reach a shoulder height of 39 inches and weigh about 175 pounds. Urials are the next smallest wild sheep after mouflons. Adult rams have a white bib with a long white neck ruff, immature males have a smaller darker neck ruff. Upper parts are tawny-brown, rump patch, muzzle, belly and lower legs are white with a darker stripe separating belly and upper body. The horns are long and homonymous, growing in a tight circle or forming an open spiral. The largest rams can have horns in excess of 40 inches in length. This sheep is found in TURKMENIJA and KAZAKHSTAN on waterless desert areas. The hunt is not very difficult and the hunters don't have to be physically well-prepared. The best season is October-November when the temperature may drop to 5-10C. Due to the approaching rut time the groups of animals are big, sometimes about 100 animals and more. Listed as CITES animal.
